From the 16th to the 19th of May 2017, the Bioparco hosted the 11th International Conference of EZG, the horticultural group of EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria). Forty delegates, including botanists and horticulturists from various European zoological institutions and representatives of Italian scientific bodies participated in the meeting.
Like every year, the group of technicians and professionals that operate for the management, valorisation and design of the green areas in various European institutions, gathered to share the different issues and knowledge in their field of work. The central topic of this year’s edition: Invasive Alien Species; this is a very current problem that affects the environment and that involves both international and Italian institutions such as IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), ISPRA (Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research), The Phytosanitary Service of Lazio Region, and ANVE (National Association of Nurserymen Exporters): representatives of these organizations shared their knowledge and experiences through presentations and demonstrations.
The conference, as scheduled, combined presentations by expert speakers with guided tours around the city of Rome. The visit to Villa Borghese and its “secret gardens” was realized in collaboration with the Sovrintendenza Capitolina for Cultural Heritage , whereas the visit to Villa Medici was organized in collaboration with the direction of the Academy of France, which welcomed the group with a delightful appetizer in the gardens of the Villa. The following day the group visited the Presidential Estate of Castel Porziano, where an entomologist explained the problems related to a beetle infestation detected on the pine trees of the Estate and the effects of the numerous felling of domestic pine trees occurred as a consequence.
The Conference successfully concluded with a pleasant guided tour in the Municipal Rose Garden. From here, seen its particular location in one of the most beautiful archeological areas of Rome, the group went for a walk towards the beauties of Aventino hill.
