The Bioparco extends over a surface area of 17 hectares amidst one of the city’s most suggestive botanical areas. It comprises typical plants of the Mediterranean area, such as the live oak, the local pine and the cork oak, as well as exotic plants such as the many types of palm, magnolia, the black mulberry or the camphor tree.

Plants play a fundamental role in modern zoological gardens. When new exhibits are designed an attempt is always made to rebuild the animals’ original habitats by using plants from the their area of origin, or ones that are very similar. For example, the Bioparco’s Great Aviary, Reptile House, Bear Valley, Chimpanzee Village or Giraffe House have all been built to replicate the species’ original habitat.

This ensures that animals are given more comfortable and natural spaces and that visitors enjoy an overall view of the different ecosystems. These, in turn, improve teaching and environmental conservation efforts.
Indeed, in addition to ensuring the animals’ wellbeing,  the Bioparco is committed to biodiversity conservation efforts, including plant biodiversity, and strongly advocates the importance of conserving natural habitats as a whole.
