Distribution and Habitat:

Vive nelle foreste pluviali del Sud-est asiatico in prossimità dei corsi d’acqua a lento scorrimento come fiumi, acquitrini e paludi.

Può raggiungere i 2 m di lunghezza. La coda è molto corta rispetto al resto del corpo.

Terricolo, è uno dei serpenti meno attivi. Trova riparo tra il fogliame o sotto un tronco caduto dove rimane anche per mesi aspettando la preda.

La femmina depone da 12 a 16 uova che avvolge con il corpo per mantenerle alla temperatura ottimale attraverso ripetute contrazioni muscolari.

Si nutre soprattutto di roditori che caccia all’agguato e poi soffoca tra le spire.

La sua pelle è molto apprezzata dal mercato conciario e si stima siano migliaia gli esemplari prelevati ogni anno dal proprio habitat naturale.

Non è considerato in pericolo, ma il commercio per la sua pelle e la perdita dell’habitat stanno riducendo alcune popolazioni

This is the most comprehensive inventory that codifies the degree of threat to species globally based on a system of categories and scientifically rigorous quantitative criteria.
