Un tempo ampiamente distribuito in tutte le regioni Sahelo-Sahariane ad ovest della Valle del Nilo, è oggi circoscritto ad aree limitate del Chad, della Mauritania e del Niger.

Size

Ha un’altezza di circa un metro e mezzo e un peso compreso tra i 60 e i 120 kg.

Behavior

Attivo soprattutto al crepuscolo e durante le ore notturne, trascorre le ore più calde al riparo della poca ombra che il deserto gli offre. Si sposta in branchi misti di 5-20 individui guidati da un maschio dominante.

Reproduction

La riproduzione può avvenire tutto l’anno e dopo una gestazione di circa 8 mesi nasce in genere un solo piccolo.

Diet

Si nutre di erba e arbusti che ricerca percorrendo grandi distanze nel deserto.

Tra le antilopi è quella maggiormente adattata al deserto: possiede zoccoli ampi per non sprofondare nella sabbia e produce un’urina molto concentrata per limitare al massimo gli sprechi idrici. Inoltre, può trascorrere la maggior parte della vita senza bere, recuperando l’acqua dalla vegetazione di cui si nutre.

Threat Level

È un’antilope seriamente minacciata di estinzione a causa del bracconaggio per la carne, la pelle e le corna, e della perdita del suo habitat che hanno portato a un crollo della popolazione in natura, dove oggi sopravvivono meno di 100 individui.

The European studbook (ESB) is an inventory aimed at monitoring the status of individuals of a particular species in captivity and generally precedes the EEP.
RED LIST IUCN: The species is included in the Red List of Threatened Species compiled by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). This is the most comprehensive inventory that codifies the degree of threat to species globally based on a system of categories and scientifically rigorous quantitative criteria.
