Distribution and Habitat:

Centro America; vive in ambienti acquatici a lento scorrimento tra cui fiumi, laghi, paludi e anche canali di scarico agricoli ricchi di vegetazione.

Size

Il suo carapace, dalla caratteristica forma ovale, raggiunge i 25 cm di lunghezza.

Behavior

Agile nuotatrice, trascorre la giornata in acqua nuotando o camminando sul fondo melmoso. Grazie alla posizione delle narici e degli occhi, situati in cima al muso, può respirare e vedere rimanendo in immersione.

Reproduction

Depone circa 10 uova 2 o 3 volte l’anno che schiudono dopo un periodo variabile fra i 2 e i 7 mesi.

Diet

Cattura prede, anche di grandi dimensioni, che poi lacera con la bocca dotata di un becco molto affilato. Si nutre soprattutto di insetti, altri invertebrati, piccoli pesci e anfibi.
