Originaria di Perù, Bolivia, Argentina e Cile è il camelide sudamericano che si spinge alle maggiori altitudini, popolando le zone montane delle Ande dai 3200 ai 4800 metri di quota.

Size

È la più piccola specie di camelide esistente, può raggiungere i 65 kg di peso e 1,9 m di lunghezza.

Behavior

Specie diurna, territoriale e sociale, vive in gruppi familiari di circa 10 individui composti di femmine e giovani guidati da un maschio dominante oppure in gruppi formati da soli maschi, non di rado anche isolati.

Reproduction

La gestazione dura 11 mesi e nasce un solo piccolo che rimane con la madre per 4-9 mesi se maschio, 8-11 mesi se femmina. La maturità sessuale viene raggiunta dopo i due anni.

Diet

Si nutre di un’ampia varietà di piante, principalmente erbacee, rimanendo in prossimità dell’acqua per sopperire al proprio fabbisogno giornaliero.

Threat Level

Non è considerata a rischio, anche se il bracconaggio per la carne e per il pelo, i conflitti con i locali per la competizione con il bestiame domestico e i cambiamenti climatici ne minano concretamente il numero.
